Tailscale your own private network
So I have backup servers, they are set up in fact to mirror the live servers, so I need them on the internet but only with a static IP for my use. Tailscale installed on my local machine and the servers on the network allows me to set up such a network.
It works fine with proxmox incidentally. So I let the backup machines talk to DHCP in the usual way then login to the console, install tailscale and then type:-
tailscale status
and this gives me a list of the servers names, I can then use these names to access the server.
ssh root@xxbackup
It can run on Windows/Linux/Mac machines and is really useful when you want to access machines as if they are on the internet with out a static IP but expose them to your local machine, ideal for testing.
Testing by spoofing the domain
So lets say I’m building a new website for xyz.com, if you edit the /etc/hosts file on your local machine (/windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts on windows) you can then overwrite the default DNS return – so by adding
tailscale_address xyz.com
It means the computer will instead of accessing the real domain switch to the demo server, then when you want to go live just remove the line from hosts.
